This is going to sound like a real newbie question. But I just bought a Tivo HD DVR and was wondering what I can transfer to my computer using Pytivo. Will anything of hd caliber such as WMV, mp4 etc have to be transcoded to mpeg-2 and has anyone noted a loss in quality? For instance what if you rip a blu-ray disc and then want to send it to Tivo...how does that work. Thanks in advance...
You are correct that the HD content will need to be converted to mpeg-2 prior to transfer if it isn't already in that format. There isn't really a loss in quality from my experience but as we all know mpeg-2 isn't as efficient of an encoding format so the space a comparable quality mpeg-2 file will take up will be more. Many people have the maximum resolution and bitrate that the Tivo will support in their settings (1080i and 16M/sec I believe) so they minimize any quality loss but with a small sacrifice to file size stored on the Tivo.
In general, any format that ffmpeg can handle can be converted to mpeg-2 and therefore is supported by pyTivo. IIRC there is a finite list of extensions that are defined in pyTivo but they include the popular video, image, and audio formats. Where you might run into unsupported file types are with ancillary programs like pyTivoMetaThis.py that doesn't support .mkv in the official build but a quick edit or using rdian06's build of pyTivoMetaThis adds that in just fine. Oh and many HD issues are averted by using either wmcbrine's or wgw's forks.
Hope this helps,
