I have a cron job that uses handbrakecli to convert my .mkv files to mp4. But I was wondering if there was any advantage to doing the same with avi files. (I'm looking to not have pytivo do on-the-fly work as it streams to my tivo, but doing that ahead of time.)

MP4 and MPEG-2 program streams (and a small class of WMV) are the only kind of files that pyTivo can pass unmodified. So, yes, the situation with AVIs would be the same as with MKVs. _________________ My pyTivo fork . My page
although you may not need to transcode/convert your mkvs if the video streams are in h264 (also known as x264) format then you can simply remux them into an mp4. If the audio track is not ac3 I'd recommend transcoding this to ac3. In fact the latest releases of pytivo can do this for you.
